The Engine Room provides consulting, research, advisory, project management and development services across a range of sectors, including: national and local governments; non-governmental organizations; businesses; schools and charitable trusts.

Art & Education

We currently run projects in partnership with local government and other organizations, looking at the different ways in which art and cultural activity can enhance educational environments. Current and recent projects include:

Creativity Matters – Looking at the effects on children of artists in non-teaching roles in Early Years education.

Music Education – Evaluating the impact of a national music education programme.

Creativity Connects – Expanding opportunities for Looked After Children to engage with cultural education.

Diploma Projects – Creating a framework through which to deliver the National Creative and Media Diploma for 14-19 year olds.

We welcome enquiries from organizations to partner on educational development initiatives. This can include community renewal, skills enhancement and social arts projects.

 

Cultural Policy Development

Working in partnership with a range of national government institutions including those based in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark, Engine Room has conducted detailed evaluations of cultural policy development and implementation. Current and recent projects include:

Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture – studying the level of cultural provision in Iceland as a means of informing policy and practice.

Engine Room welcomes enquiries from government agencies and prospective partner organizations interested in questions surrounding cultural policy.

 

Professional and Organizational Development in Art

Many arts organizations and associations are constantly looking for ways to improve delivery of their services. Engine Room works with its clients to ensure that they are developing the most effective frameworks to make the progressive changes they need.

Current and recent projects include:

NESTA – Evaluating the effectiveness of a Fellowship programme set up by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.

Polka Theatre – Examining the ways in which a cultural organization can monitor the impact of its creative education programme.

We would be happy to discuss development needs with any organization in the cultural sector. Our projects reflect our specialization in evaluation, publication and dissemination.
 

 

Public Art for Business

Engine Room works with business and corporate clients to help them realize the full potential of their cultural assets.  Current and recent projects include:

Domestic & General – Addressing ways in which companies can maximize the impact of their private art collections.

Barratt Homes Sculpture Commissions – Working alongside the well-known home-builder to explore the scope of developing new approaches to public sculpture installations.

We engage proactively with businesses and corporate clients to support them in addressing their cultural needs.

Museums

Engine Room has built strong collaborative relations with partners such as Tate and London South Bank University as a means of exploring the most effective ways through which national museums can respond to changing audience needs.  Current and recent projects include:

Tate Encounters – exploring Tate Britain’s role in the formation of British national identity.

Visual Dialogues – evaluating a Strategic Commissioning initiative that brings together museums across England.

Engine Room encourages approaches from museums, galleries and other cultural institutions to explore new developments as many public bodies continue to innovate in their programmes.
