The project was designed to test methods of delivery and partnership models for the new diploma which is to be taught as a Consortium across schools, colleges and Higher Education with input from professional artists and designers. ![]() 'War Horse' gallops into Wimbledon! Two artists from Wimbledon College of Art sculpture department also undertook their own research by visiting props manager Allan Edwards, at the National Theatre to gain advice on how best to construct the puppet and its' moving parts. This preparation and research culminated in a two day workshop within the college sculpture department where students worked in teams to construct their designated parts of the horse - some working on legs, others constructed the intricate head and some focused on the saddle, reigns and stirrups! Throughout this process the students had in mind their final show at Wimbledon Theatre and were encouraged to plan, practice and refine their performance. The project presented the young people with the opportunity to come to Wimbledon College of Art and experience learning in a different context - one student remarked that the experience had caused them 'to be patient, to work hard, to be willing to take direction and listen', another remarked that 'it has been good to work in a different atmosphere and be taught by professionals'. On reflection, the project accommodated a large number of students who could not always be fully engaged with all of the tasks. The level of concentration and technical expertise required by the professional artists to meet the tight performance deadline meant that they had to be immersed in the process of construction rather than meet all of the learning needs of such a diverse range of students. Pupils also required more rehearsal time at the theatre for their final performance. With all this in mind The Engine Room is keen to expand this partnership into a second phase to refine and develop the project. The Engine Room would like to thank Merton Borough 14-19 for funding the project, the artists and staff from Wimbledon College of Art and all of the staff and pupils at Ricards Lodge School for their participation.
